Alternative Medicine: A Christian Perspective

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is becoming increasingly popular, and increasingly confusing, in North America. There are concerns about its scientific basis and spiritual roots. Some Christians uncritically use CAM, some “Christianize” it by adding a new label, and some reject it entirely. Consequently, CAM requires careful evaluation from both scientific and spiritual/religious perspectives. This presentation reviews CAM, considers reasons for its popularity and offers suggestions for a Christian response. We are called to responsible stewardship, which includes scientific evaluation, responsible integration of faith and science, and nurture of the soul.

E. Janet Warren (MD, PhD), current president of the CSCA, is a Family Physician with extensive experience in multiple clinical settings. She is also an independent scholar in Christian theology with a particular interest in the integration of psychology and theology.
