The Cosmic Drama Unfolds: Science and the Biblical Story
The Canadian Scientific & Christian Affiliation, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023, is home to a wide variety of perspectives on science and Christian faith as we network with members and friends of diverse backgrounds who work, study, and engage in a range of contexts relating to science. I have been inspired and challenged by the Reformed tradition, integrating and adapting it with my evolving perspectives, informed by scientific advances, rooted in theological and philosophical foundations, and nuanced through connections within and beyond the CSCA. In this talk, I will discuss ways the Biblical story, seen through the lens of “creation-fall-redemption,” is valuable for reflecting on the character, discoveries, and purposes of the natural sciences.
Arnold E. Sikkema (PhD from UBC in 1997), professor of physics at Trinity Western University in Langley since 2005, and executive director of the Canadian Scientific & Christian Affiliation since 2018, has a background in general relativity and condensed matter theory. His current research interests are in theoretical biophysics and in the Christian philosophy of science, particularly in the relationship between physics and biology. Arnold has been involved in Christian higher education since 1997 and was appointed to the executive council of the CSCA in 2011. Originally from Ontario, he and his wife Valerie (a professional horticulturist) have been happy to call BC home since 1991, except for a sojourn in the USA from 1997 to 2005. They have three adult children, three grandchildren, and one poodle.
