Q&A #32 – Andy Quick (21 August 2023)

In Blogs, CSCA 50 Qs by Rebecca Dielschneider

For the past 50 years, the Canadian Scientific and Christian Affiliation has facilitated discussions about science and Christian faith in Canada. As part of our 50th-anniversary celebrations, we asked 50 CSCA members to comment on their personal connections to science, scripture, and Canadian scenery. We will share these contributions throughout 2023 in the hope that you will find them engaging and encouraging.

CSCA member of the week: Andy Quick, Retired Software Engineer.

1. Why did you choose your scientific discipline?

I had a great high school Computer Science teacher who arranged to send my FORTRAN programs on punch cards for nightly runs on an actual computer (thanks, Mr. Brown). I find it rewarding to understand a problem well enough to solve it with a computer program. And even more rewarding to possibly see deep structure in the problem to solve an instance of it a million times faster by using a better algorithm.

2. What is one of your favourite Bible verses and why?

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

—John 3:16-17

It speaks of Jesus’s love for me and about how I should demonstrate Jesus to other people.

3. Which Canadian city or landscape do you love exploring and why?

I like to explore the Great Lakes of southern Ontario, with their natural beauty and wildlife.
